“We are indeed much more than what we eat, but what we eat can nevertheless help us to be much more than what we are.” – Adelle Davis
Easily one of the most controversial subjects in the health and fitness industry, nutrition is one of the key components to enhancing our minds and bodies. With a variety of “diets” out there from low-carb, no-carb, caveman to keto – experts continue to debate what is the best nutritional strategy. But the one thing that most, if not all, experts will agree on is that the food we choose to put in our bodies directly affects our body, mind and emotional state.
We all know that proper nutrition will affect the way we look. We can eat the same amount of calories on a “sugar-filled” diet as we would on an “eat-clean” diet but our body composition would be different. Regardless of how much exercise we do, nutrition plays the key role in how we look. As the old adage goes, “you can’t out-exercise a bad diet”.
But food plays a much more complex role in our lives than just aesthetics. Did you know that the foods we choose to consume can have a significant impact on our mental and emotional health as well? The food we choose as our fuel directly affects how our brain works and what type of mood we’re going to be in – carbs can provide a calming effect as it increases our serotonin, protein can enhance our alertness and certain healthy fats can reduce depression.
The bottom line is that proper nutrition isn’t just about looking good. It makes us feel good and perform better too. And yes, it seems like a lot of work to understand what an how to eat but making the conscious and thoughtful effort to nourish our bodies properly will lead to the nourishment of our total self.
